It can be tough to be sure when your Las Vegas synthetic grass only needs maintenance and restored compared to a complete replacement. Don’t worry, we are here to assist you with this quick and handy guide.

ON-SITE EVALUATION

If it is a synthetic lawn that can endure long past its warranty or a sports turf field, it is essential to look at some of the following points to check for wear. Having an artificial turf assessed by an expert is best.

INADEQUATE DRAINAGE

One of the earliest indications of inadequate drainage can be observed with standing water on the turf. Even though this does not indicate that the artificial turf needs replacement but should be looked into or properly maintained over the life of the synthetic turf, then it can be corrected when it's replaced. If you see pooling, this could indicate an issue or dips with the sub-base system. More regularly you will discover that water will move around the turf infill making the turf to lay down as the water mats the fibers. This can be seen where downspouts are placed as well as water run off areas.

SURFACE DAMAGE

If your turf is approaching the end of its life, you might begin observing degradation or other damage due to ultraviolet light. Be sure to occasionally check your synthetic surface for damage as a result of pets or wild animals and sometimes even lawn mowers. Additionally, damage from backyard fires, rough weather, or other incidents can impact a turf’s lifespan.

STAINS & ODORS

Paint or oil spills may be especially tricky to manage on artificial turf if not washed right away, leading to permanent damage. Lead-based paint is not removable from synthetic surfaces. If you own a pet who uses the yard, it’s advised to do frequent cleaning to keep it looking wonderful and smell free. Take a look at our cleaning guide here. If you are dealing with turf that’s been neglected, replacement might be the only option.

FADED & MATTED SURFACE

Years of UV exposure is one of the main contributors to turf damage. High-quality artificial turf is treated with UV stabilizers, but once these stabilizers are exhausted numerous years after installing your turf, you might notice a color change and patches where the grass becomes matted because of UV and heavy traffic. If the surface is not regularly expertly maintained as part of regular maintenance, it will be harder to restore the turf every year.

INFILL COMPACTIONS

After a while, infill can begin to compact, exactly like soil does. If artificial turf is not regularly maintained, it can result in the surface getting stiff and compacted. Walk on the grass to feel for sections that are oddly hard. Having an artificial grass expert test the surface hardness with a testing system like the GMAX is the only way to find out how compacted the surface actually is. These systems will drop a weight that includes an accelerometer from a established height to determine deceleration, AKA how fast the weight stops once it hits the surface.

INFILL MEASUREMENTS

With heavy rain or foot traffic, infill materials will usually began to migrate off the surface. It is important to keep your infill depth over 20mm to keep the grass leaves standing tall and the synthetic grass working the way it was designed. Artificial turf that has lost a large portion of infill will lead to further surface matting. It is likely you just have to have an infill refresh instead of a total turf replacement, so make sure to talk to a professional.
